Quotes & Reviews

"I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - Pinot Noir may be Grant Taylor’s lifeblood, but you need a white count to keep things balanced; something this snappy Riesling made from 25-year old vines does beautifully."
Hawkes Bay Today, Yvonne Lorkin 5 Stars

"Grant Taylor has been making Riesling from 27-year-old vines on Black Ridge Vineyard in Alexandra for a few years and it's becoming a classic...Another wine for aficionados."
Charmian Smith. Otago Daily Times

"…a rivetingly lovely core of still sweet fruit, a twist of oak spice and a racy – yet airy – lightness. More wines like this, and the Waitaki’s stocks will surely rise."
4.5 Stars Cuisine New Zealand, Pinot Noir Tasting, Oct 2010

"Impressively broad yet tangy and light on it’s feet. This is about much more than simple pinot fruit. Offers sneaky flavor intensity without any excess sweetness or weight"
92 points, Stephen Tanzer

"A good example of Gibbston Pinot shows amazingly seductive perfume and elegant mouthfeel, and this beauty shows just that. The nose is ripe and fragrant displaying red/black cherry, spice, mushroom and a touch of dried herb characters. It’s beautifully fruited on the palate, showing silky texture and fine grainy tannins. The flavours are seamlessly fused and shows excellent poise and balance."
93 points, 5 Stars Sam Kim, Wine Orbit            July 2010

“The 2006 Gibbston Vineyard Pinot Noir is evidence that Grant knows this land better than many, exhibiting an engaging, savoury-tinged nose with admirable concentration on the palate that is suffused with both texture and tension."
Wine Advocate, 92 Points, May 2008

“Having worked in Napa, Grant was head winemaker at Gibbston Valley Wines for 13 years before founding his own label after purchasing 6.5 ha of land in Gibbston. His wines are suffused with personality and charm and Grant obviously has an acute understanding of what makes great Pinot Noir.”
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate,
May 2008

“A bold but beautifully balanced expression of pinot noir that shows Grant Taylor’s almost zen-like affinity with the variety. Curvy and plush, rippling with dark fruit and couverture chocolate and finishing with powdery tannins.”

Gourmet Traveller Wine

“Full red. Soil-driven aromas of dark cherry, raspberry preserves, peppery spices, smoke and cola. Large-scaled, creamy and rich but with a restrained sweetness and impressive inner-mouth energy to it’s crushed cherry, red raspberry and flint flavours. More tannic than the Gibbston, but rich and spicy enough to support it. Finishes with a dusty, tactile impression of extract and superb structure for aging.”

Stephen Tanzer, 92 (+) Points              September 2011

“Good full red. Pungent strawberry, black raspberry, smoked meat and violet on the nose; a bit reminiscent of Cote-Rotie. Then vibrant and juicy in the mouth, with intense crushed berry flavours complemented by spices, herbs and a saline nuance. Less fat and sweet than the 2008 version of this bottling, but this has a terrific spine of acids and tannins for slow evolution in bottle…builds impressively as the wine opens in the glass. I’d like to come back to this one in a couple of years.”

Stephen Tanzer, 91-93 Points                September 2011
